The A/C compressor on the T1N Sprinter (2000–2006) pressurizes refrigerant to cool the cabin; when it fails internally or its clutch stops engaging, the system produces no cold air. Failures range from clutch electrical faults to full internal seizure, and internal failures require replacing the receiver/drier at the same time.

Symptoms

  • No cold air from the vents even though the A/C button is pressed and the system has been recharged [6].

Steps

  1. CLUTCH/COIL SERVICE ONLY (no refrigerant discharge needed): Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable [2, 3].
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt [2, 3].
  3. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector from the clutch coil on top of the compressor, and remove the retainer securing the coil lead [2, 3].
  4. Remove the bolt securing the clutch plate to the compressor shaft. If needed, use a band-type oil filter wrench or strap wrench on the clutch plate to hold it while breaking the bolt loose [2].
  5. Tap the clutch plate lightly with a plastic mallet to release it from the shaft splines; remove the clutch plate and shims — do not lose the shims [2, 3].

  11. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. If equipped with an add-on rear A/C system, remove the lower (Denso 10S17) compressor and position it out of the way [7].
  12. Support the compressor, remove the three mounting bolts, and remove the compressor from the engine compartment [7].
  13. Drain the refrigerant oil from the old compressor and measure it. Drain the new compressor fully, then fill it with exactly the same amount of oil that was drained from the old one [5, 25].
